Summary
I joined the Amazon Labs team to support the imminent launch of the Amazon Fire Phone, where I redesigned the Kindle communication and settings apps to align with the Fire Phone’s Dynamic Perspective design language. Working under tight deadlines in a high-pressure environment, I produced detailed design documentation and iterated quickly based on feedback from senior leadership.
At launch, the Fire Phone generated strong interest thanks to its distinctive software and Dynamic Perspective features. However, it was positioned and priced as a premium device, while Amazon’s lower-cost devices delivered better value for most customers and soon became the primary focus for the team.
Amazon fire phone
Dynamic perspective
A key complexity of the Fire Phone was its proprietary Dynamic Perspective. Using an accelerometer and four front-facing cameras, the phone generated a parallax effect that we applied to icons, hero images, and other UI elements. This enabled new interactions, like tilting the phone to scroll, but also made design handoff more challenging. To support engineering, we created tightly organized documentation detailing the 3D icons, layouts, and motion design.
Communication apps
I was responsible for porting and optimizing the full communication ecosystem, Contacts, Email, Chat, and Settings, from the Kindle tablet to the Fire Phone. A key challenge was translating the larger Kindle layout to a smaller mobile screen, which required redesigning several flows and features for the new form factor. To ensure precise implementation, I produced detailed, well-structured documentation that referenced specific 3D components and icons, and partnered closely with engineers to uphold design fidelity throughout the build.
